Project

Left Ventricle with Mitral Valve

Patient-specific simulation of blood flow in the left ventricle with mitral valve. Captures the complex vortex formation during diastole.

1 Challenge

Patient-specific simulation of blood flow in the left ventricle with mitral valve to understand cardiac hemodynamics.

2 CFD Approach

Simulation of a cardiovascular cycle (systole-diastole) with MRI-based geometry of the left ventricle. Mitral and aortic valves were modeled as inflow and outflow boundaries.

3 Results

Contours of vorticity magnitude during moving walls of LV show formations of E and A waves during diastole.

4 Engineering Conclusion

The simulation captures the complex vortex formation and blood flux through mitral/aortic valves.
