Project

Fish Swimming (IBM)

Immersed Boundary Method simulation of fish swimming showing the body kinematics and vortex generation.

1 Challenge

Simulating fish swimming using the Immersed Boundary Method.

2 CFD Approach

Fish-like swimming motion was simulated with IBM. The lateral displacement of the fish backbone was prescribed as a function of time, mimicking body and caudal fin (BFC) locomotion.

3 Results

The simulation shows the body bending into a backward-traveling undulatory wave that extends to the caudal fin.

4 Engineering Conclusion

IBM effectively captures the vortex generation and thrust production in fish swimming.
